Date Problem

Hello,
In our website we wish to put a date of birth as a value when a new user registers himself.
I made exactly as the url : http://ez.no/doc/ez_publish/technical_manual/3_7/reference/datatypes/date

But As teh comment there , i need users who have date of birth before 1970 to be able to register them selves? how would i do that .
