Fetch content from multiple folder-items for frontpage

hi all,
I try to fetch and display several folder's names and descriptions on a multi-column-startpage (ordered by divs). But all I get is the content of the current active node, e.g. the root-folder at startup.
Does anybody has a piece of code for fetching and displaying a column-specific content-item e. g. from a folder-node ?
