Safe mode restriction

PHP Error: Warning: file_exists() [function.file-exists]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 72 is not allowed to access / owned by uid 0 in /var/www/tinlizzie/lib/ezi18n/classes/ezcodepage.php on line 575

I get the message shown in the title when I try to set up EZ. The opening graphic appears with that message across the top of it. I am trying to install EZ 3.2.3.

I have run 'modfix.sh,' so the permissions in var are set.

I have searched the forum for questions similar to this, and have read all those responses that have to do with permissions. (I am about halfway between newbie and competent when it comes to Linux, and my PHP knowledge is limited. I am also running my own server, so tweaking things should be no problem. <==famous last words!)

If someone would point me toward a solution, I'd appreciate it.

I have been researching the file_exists(), and have an idea that it is not PHP but Apache that is causing the error. I'll be digging into it further, and if I find the solution, I'll post here.

Meanwhile, if anyone else knows, thanks in advance for the help.

By the way, my set up is Apache 2 (Mandrake Linux 9.1) - - -

In looking up my PHP version, much to my surprise, PHP is NOT INSTALLED!!! I have no php.ini in /etc.

Sigh. Ignore my questions for now. I've got to investigate to see what happened and why a package I explicitly chose did not get installed.
