When travelling past the Macdonnell ranges west of Alice Springs, clear, flat scrubby plains go for miles until canyons appear to the opening of Areyonga. The town is nestled in a picturesque valley flanked by 300 metre high ranges, with ghost gums dotted through out the creek beds.
Areyonga's community of just 215 people has worked over recent years, in spite of temperature extremes, limited resources and few funds, they have proved what can be achieved through community determination.
When your community is located hundreds of kilometres from the nearest population centre there is often little point in relying on services from elsewhere to achieve improvement. With this in mind Areyonga has chosen to employ their own people rather than engage outside contractors for community projects.
The community of Areyonga is a "dry" area. No alcohol allowed.

Borroloola was gazetted a township in 1885. The town was a lawless outpost where most people carried guns and illegal
activities like smuggling and grog running were a way of life. This lawlessness prompted the Police to build a Police
Station in 1886 and Mounted Constable Donegan and Curtis were stationed here. The Old Police Station today is a
pioneer museum recording Indigenous and Non Indigenous history of the area.
Today the town is still a bit wild and unruly at times but the people are friendly and easy going. After Cyclone Cathy in 1984 Borroloola was finally recognised as needing a helping hand. The building of half decent houses began in 1985 which changed the look of Borroloola. Territory Housing started building public houses for public servants and local people. The standard of Aboriginal housing has finally improved and more new houses are being built.

Marngarr Community Government Council is situated at Ski-beach which is a very beautiful beach on Melville Bay.
Gunyangara (Ski-Beach) community was established back in the late 70's, early 80's, by Galarrwuy Yunupingu and his family, who at that time lived in Yirrkala, a yolngu community15km east of Nhulunbuy.
The family decided that it was time for the Gumatj people to move out of Yirrkala and occupy their own tribal lands, in and around the Gove Peninsula, so that the children would be taught the songlines, history and stories of the Gumatj people.
The Community of Gunyangara is on Gumatj land belonging to the Yunupingu, Burarrwanga and Munungirritj clan groups
of northeast Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Pine Creek is situated 220 km south of Darwin and 90km north of Katherine at the junction of the Stuart and Kakadu
Highways in the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory.
The town was established in the late 1800's as a result of the discovery of gold by the crew of the Overland Telegraph Line. Pine Creek still relies on mining for its survival, with the majority of the population involved in mining or related industries. Tourism has recently become an important part of the town's economy as facilities for travelers have improved.
Pine Creek has a population of around 400, which includes surroundings stations and Kybrook Farm, an Aboriginal community of around 100 people from various tribal groups.
The Climate is tropical with the Wet Season from October to March averaging 1370mm of rainfall a year. The dry season lasts from April to September, with clear, sunny skies and temperatures in the mid twenties every day.
Pine Creek is home to many bird species and is an ideal spot to view the elusive Hooded Parrots and Gouldian Finch.

Groote Island (island) is Dutch for Great Island. It is a beautiful place just off the Australian mainland. The region is famous for the manganese mining which is conducted on the island.
The main languages that are spoken in the community are Anindilyakwa and English.
Their are approximately eight hundred and fifty people living around the Angurugu community. The Angurugu Community Government Council is dedicated to offering the best services to the community.

The Coomalie Community Government Area is large and diverse in it's topography. Several hundred kilometres of roads appear on maps and plans, however many of them are unformed and others simply impractical to ever build. The region also contains the drainage basins of the Adelaide and Finniss Rivers. These large rivers can cause inundation and waterlogging in certain areas.
Experience has shown that groundwater availability is spasmodic in some areas. Land owners should not assume that the land which they have purchased will provide them with sufficient water for horticultural or other purposes.
Coomalie Council operates on a limited budget and will not necessarily be undertaking any works which will provide reasonable access to your land. The onus is upon the landowner to provide access.

The Council is responsible for providing services to Yarralin, Lingara (40 km from Yarralin), Pigeon Hole (98 km from Yarralin), Yinguwinarri (130 km from Yarralin) and Kulumanbulani (20 km from Pigeon Hole).
The population of the communities is approximately 550 people. Nagiarman people are strongly represented at Yarralin, the Munburra people at Yinguwinarri and the Bilandala people at Pigeon Hole. While Pigeon Hole and Lingara contain representatives from several family groups, smaller family groups dominate Yinguwinarri and Kulumanbulani. There is a commonality between the constituent populations and they all share a common regional history to the main community at Yarralin.

Galiwin'ku community is situated on Elcho Island. Elcho Island is part of the Wessel Island group located in the East Arnhem Region of the Northern Territory. Galiwin'ku is the major community on Elcho Island and is 550 kilometres northeast of Darwin. Galiwin'ku is the largest community in East Arnhem land.
The township of Galiwin'ku is based at the southern end of Elcho Island and has a floating population of around 2,200 Yolngu people which includes outstations at Mata Mata, Inglis Island, Maparru and Gariyak and many others.
Djambarrpuyngu and Gupapuyngu are the most commonly spoken Yolngu Mata languages, but there are perhaps another 12 languages, which are also spoken, for example Galpu clan members speaking Galpu language and Warramiri clan speaking Warramiri language.

Kunbarllanjnja (Oenpelli) is located 320 km east of Darwin at the western edge of the Arnhem Land Reserve.
Kunbarllanjnja is located on a small ridge between coastal black soil plains, marshes and the Arnhemland Escarpment.
The majority of the Aboriginal residents are Kunwinjku freshwater people whose traditional land extends from Oenpelli, to the Mann and Liverpool Rivers in the east, and just short of the coast line to the north.

Warruwi Community Inc is the local governing body on Goulbourn Island of the Coast of the Northern Territory.
Mawng is the main language spoken by approximately 750 people on Warruwi Goulburn Island and surrounding areas but other Aboriginal languages are spoken on Warruwi, these include Kunbarlang, Kunwingku and Kalpu languages. English is generally the second language.
Fishing is the main past time, turtle being the most sought after catch with dugong running second. The variety of other fish life is prolific including crayfish and mud-crabs. Oyster beds line many of the shores.

Maningrida is located 500km east of Darwin and 300km north east of Jabiru. It is on the North Central Arnhem Land coast of the Arafura Sea in the Northern Territory.
The town of Maningrida supports a population of 2,600 people, which includes those who live on the 30 homeland centres or outstations around Maningrida.
The Kunbidji people are the traditional landowners of this country in central Arnhem Land. The Kunbidji language is called Ndjebbana.
The other main tribal groups who live in the area are Kunbarlang, Nakkara, Burarra, Gun-nartpa, Gurrgoni, Rembarrnga, Eastern Kunwinjku, Djinang, Wurlaki and Gupapuyngu.

Lajamanu has a population of one thousand people and is situated around 557 kilometres from Katherine and Darwin is approximately 890 kilometres. Road access is via the Victoria Highway (turning off after 120 kilometres) onto the Buntine Highway for a further 323 kilometres and then 104 to Lajamanu (a dirt but well formed road).
Lajamanu is a very strongly traditional community, where the English language is secondary. Traditional customs are still practiced and in many ways dominate the thinking of the community. On cultural matters the Lajamanu Community Government Council, defers to the local tribal council.

Arltarlpilta Community is located at Atitjere (Harts Range) 215km from Alice Springs by road and it normally takes 2 and a half hours to drive and around 30 minutes to fly from Alice Springs. It is an alcohol-free community, and has a population of about 300 residents (including 5 outstations).
Famous for its fossicking areas due south of the community, which encompasses the abandoned mica mines of Mount Palmer.
The Arltarlpilta Community Government Council officially came under the Local Government Act on the 26th September 1997, bring together Atitjere, Mount Eaglebeak, Foxalls Wells, Irrelirre and Unpayekerke under the local scheme.

Alpurrurulam Community Government Council governs the Lake Nash community in the Tennant Creek region of Central Australia.
In the Dreaming, a great number of beings passed this way and performed many actions, including Nyemale, the grass rat, and Kwerrenye, the green snake.
In the time of men and women, Alpurrurulam remained a vital place for body and spirit, providing food and a place for ceremonies.
The original people were called Bularnu. Their neighbours to the west were the Wakaya, to the south Ayerrerenge and to the south west the Alyawarre.

Numbulwar has a population of around 1200 people and is located in East Arnhem Land in the Gulf of Carpenteria. The population is made up of mainly traditional indigenous land owners with a small community of non-indigenous staff mainly employed in the areas of health, council or school.

Approximately 500km east of Darwin and 250km west of Nhulunbuy, Milingimbi is situated on an island half a kilometre off
the mainland and forms part of the Crocodile Island Group.
A restricted (dry) traditional community, the combined populations of the Homelands and Milingimbi community has approximately 1000 residents. The residents are spread through about 13 clan groups. There are approximately 50 non-Aboriginal residents.
There are six established outstations but housing shortages, drinking water and access determine the level of occupation of the Homelands.

The Belyuen Community is about 20 kilometres from the Cox Peninsula jetty, an eight-kilometre ferry ride from Darwin in the Northern Territory. The community can als be reached by travelling approximately 125km by road from Darwin.
The Belyuen Community Government Council covers an area of 4091 hectares more or less. The average population is less than 300 and residents are mostly indigenous.

Minjilang is an Aboriginal island community located 230 kms north east of Darwin in west Arnhemland. The island has an area of 120 sq kilometres and is the most northerly inhabited part of the Northern Territory. There is a population of approximately 300 people residing in the community and its outstations. The island is close to the mainland ? the Coburg Peninsular.
Minjilang Council employs several staff and is assisted by employees from the Barrah CDEP in providing community services such as housing maintenance and repair; parks and gardens; garbage collection; civil works (roads, barge landing and airstrip); mechanical workshop; essential services (power, water and sewerage); Centrelink and postal agencies.

Yugul Mangi Community Government Council is the Local Government authority responsible for the administration and
management of some 1200 square kilometres in southeast Arnhem Land.
Located at Ngukurr, the Council has direct responsibility for provision of services to some 1500 people, in the Council Wards of Ngukurr, Warliburru and Yupungalla.
Yugul Mangi is a name which encompasses the peoples belonging to seven indigenous language groups of the lower Roper
River/Gulf of Carpentaria region of South East Arnhem Land. The language groups identify as Mara, Ngandi, Alawa, Nunggubuyu, Rittarrngu, Wandarang and Ngalakan. Each language group consists of discrete clans, each having its own totems, land and related ceremonial responsibilities.
The people who comprise Yugul Mangi have a common colonial history inasmuch that Ngukurr was a missionary controlled
residential centre from 1906 onwards.

Kintore is situated 530 kilometres west of Alice Springs nestled at the base of culturally important hills, Pulikatjara meaning two hills. The population is around 450 and made up of Pintubi people. The community dates back to 1981 when the Pintubi moved back from Papunya.
The community has a school, women's centre, clinic, store, art centre, airstrip - along with the council office. The clinic has a good doctor, two nurses and indigenous health workers. The store has a selection of goods.
Over the last twelve months the community has been quite stable and many changes have occured as a result. New staff has been employed and have stayed and this in itself has been very beneficial.

The town includes a school , a health clinic , a general store & service station, Council Office and CDEP work-shops, a mechanical workshop, and there is an adjacent airstrip. An active Community Development Employment Program (CDEP) maintains much of the community facilities and developments.
