Action on "after update" object

Hi ,
I would like to konw if it was possible to execute an action after a action of update an object ?
For example I would like to call a program or a function after the update of an image.
And I don't know how to do it.
With a extension it is possible ?

This is buit in, have a look at the content / publish / after trigger.
The built a workflow and choose the affected version
