More on this is available through the API doc here : http://pubsvn.ez.no/doxygen/trunk/html/index.html . As Robin said, some of these libraries are now replaced by the eZ Components ( http://ezcomponents.org ), high-quality set of libraries solving most of the common web problematics in an elegant and efficient way. eZ Publish was originally relying on home brew libraries, solving the most common web problematics :

DB connection
HTTP handling
configuration file management
MVC-like
debug tools
etc...
