How are the filters in bug report in eZ implemented?

I noticed the urls of filters in http://www.ez.no/community/bug_reports is something like this
http://www.ez.no/community/bug_reports/(filter)/new

It is appreciated if anyone can tell me how this should be implemented in eZ publish 3.3. I have no idea: maybe a custom extension/template_operator?

I would also like to know how to do this.
Is it filtering an ezenum value?
Could this functionality also be used to sort a result set by other attributes? Like 'sort by price'?
