How to get the value from a select datatype?

I know how to get the User, I get the contentobject and the contentobjectattribute Object. attribute( 'content' ) gives me the "value" of the Selected Field, but I need the "description". How do I get this? In witch database Table is it stored??? Can someone help me??? Thanks al lot Andreas
