is there a way of controlling the object name pattern with more than just defining which strings it uses, ie. <pagetitle|strtolower|substr(5)> or similar?

The object name pattern is a pattern not a programming interface, so no.
There are enhancements request for it, but not anywhere close to do stuff like this.

So i think it is better to identify why you are asking for this.
Is it the urls? Use the url transformation system (3.10 and higher)
Is it the titles in the views / menus / paths? override the templates or use css.
Do you want to limit object name? Use short titles in your classes and limit the input, and make it required if you want to.
