The difference of ModuleRepositories and ExtensionRepositories?

The array is then set as the global path list for EZ Publish. Can somebody please elaborate on the use of these two settings, and the difference between them? I'd like to know if the EZ Team has specific plans to differentiate between modules and extensions, and how this will affect me in the development of modules.
