Approvals without cronjob

However, I noticed in the documentation that the approvals process requires the admin to run a cronjob for their approvals to actually go through. Is there a simplified approval process that does not require this? Other cmss that I know immediately post approved items - no need for any cron jobs. Many thanks, Chris http://www.barc.org.au
