Did you create a custom event class with an event date attribute? The calendar seems to work on date published attribute, which is set automatically when the object is published. When you add the calendar to your toolbar, you need to select a subtree and class type(s) to go with it. If you set the subtree to your news folder, and the class to articles, you should get dates highlighted in the calendar for each day an article was published. Getting the calendar to work with the date attribute of an event would be a little different, and require customization of the toolbar templates.
