Custom module and content objects

What I am trying to implement is a simple custom module that will parse a text file with comma separated values and prepare data for viewing (customized list of links). And I want to store this file (or path to uploaded file) in a content object. How can I interact with objects from a module? I couldn't find such a reference on your site yet, a link to some docs would be appreciated, TIA, Mihhail
