dates with optional fields

I would like to know if it is possible to create attributes with data type Date in which it is the obligatory to write the month and the year but not day. In other words attributes Date with optative field day. In case that this can be done, how can I diff the fields with the written day of which they do not have writing?

Have one for month, one for day, one for year, and make the day one optional. I am afraid that I prefer to use the data type date because:

a) Exists processing functions you specify for that data type (add of dates, shorting, etc.)

b) At the time of internationalizing it will not be necessary to create specific functions
