Doubt with ez cache

I don't understand how works the cache in ezpublish yet, each object (for example news, contacts, etc..) are stored in database) anytime that a user request a new, the system query the database? or exist some kind of static template to show the new? or the systems works with the templates cache and the content is in database? my doubt is: if the system always make consults in database it is not slow?
