how to clean the var folder?

hi all
i have a site in which a lot of files are uploaded.
But can happen that a 'File' object is deleted, while i think that the uploaded file isn't deleted, and the var folder increases enourmosly his dimension.
is there a way to detect the files not linked to an object in the db and delete them?
