PHP safe_mode?

I should have first searched the forums before asking my question - At this point, my question is: Is there a work around for a hosted server that requires safe_mode enabled?

Is it possible to run ez publish 3 on a pay hosting service that requires PHP Safe mode? I haven't seen PHP Safe mode off listed as a requirement but tech support at my provider says that ez publish requires safe mode to be off. If so, is there a work around?

I don't know how well it works, but there's a patch in the contributions section of the (this) site.
