Problem with images?

I can generally see some of the sample images (not all). After uploading to my linux site, if I then add a new image I will <b>not</b> see the image rendered in either the admin tool or the site itself. when installing on my linux shared server (running the browser wizard), ez pub creates the var/log directory with an owner of apache and write protects the directory ... so I need to get a sysadmin to delete it. Is there any way to turn of this write protection via config options?
