Hi, I downloaded the linux package "eZ Publish 4.0 (tar.gz)" from your website, uploaded to my linux server, expanded there.
First observation:
1. Missing some directories mainly var/ and subdirectories. Thus I created these directories 2. Then, I got the message: "Retreiving remote site packages list failed. You may upload packages manually."
What could be wrong with the installation procedures? carolus

Hi, The var directory will be created automatically, you on't have to create it yourself.
For the error "Retreiving remote site packages list failed. You may upload packages manually.", you may check those things :
- do you have a proxy ? If yes, during, the install, you must onfigure the /settings/siteaccess/setup/site.ini file withe the right ProxySettings. - do you have PHP CURL enabled on your Apache ? Hope it will help.

Hi,
I do not need a proxy and PHP CURL enabled. I do not have a site.ini file in the regarding directory. Can I add the missing directories and subdirectories /var/... manually and can I start the installation process by the index.php file again? For my information: Why does the system ask for downloading from your download area. Before, I downloaded the .tar file, expanded it and uploaded it to my server. carolus47

Hi Carolus The concept of site packages and package repositories is explained here: http://ez.no/doc/ez_publish/technical_manual/4_0/installation/the_setup_wizard#eztoc86337_7 If packages can not be downloaded, there can be several reasons. Maxime already mentioned one. Another one is that the user the web server is running under does not have permission to store the package under var/storage/packages. This might be caused by insufficient file system permissions.

Hi, there is no /var/storages/packages/ directory in my file structure. Also, the fine tuning did tell me to set u several /VAR/... directories and subdirectories, but not one called PACKAGES. Can I set up VAR/STORAGES/PACKAGES manually and start again download?
Alternative: I looked into the structure of the ftp-Server and found http://packages.ez.no/ezpublish/4.0/4.0.0 with several files and subdirectories. If I upload manually, which files do I have to upload? Carolus47

Normally this directory will be created by the setup. You just have to upload via the form the right package, starting by the site package which is the package containing the dependencies. For exemple, you may upload first ezflow_site.ezpkg.

Hi, also, the manual upload does not work. Some of the /var/ subdirectories had to be made manually. Maybe not all directories are available now. In which directory/subdirectory has to be uploaded? Can you tell me the directory structure (of /VAR)? carolus

Hi, my provider told me, yes. In the meantime, I managed the setup manually and ezpublish works so far. Thank you for the help. A last question with regard to your books. The books deal with 3.x version. Is there a big difference to 4.x so that it is better to wait for book updates? carolus

Hi, The eZPublish basics books is still up to date for the main concepts. What has changed is the way you develop extensions as version 4 is designed in PHP 5.x meanwhile version 3.x is designed in PHP 4.x. Another which is important is that since ersion 4.0 the eZComponents are included in eZPublish. So you must reffer on the website to the excellent article of Felix Woldt : http://ez.no/developer/articles/an_introduction_to_developing_ez_publish_extensions Better, faster, stronger, harder.
