how can I make a general template?

I would write templates for some special items. Then I want to write a general template such as "normal page" to display the similar contents. It can has a pick of article and an article lists. I know can get the node_id to display its contents. but how to deal with the pick? should I create a pick class ? then how to display the pick? thanks in advance!
