is wash operator neccesary when using attribute_view_gui ?

Hi, as the tittle says. Is using the wash operator overkill when using attribute_view_gui. I have tried to look at the datatype/content/view templates and for me
it looks like the wash operator is not neccesary when using attribute_view_gui. Can anyone verify this?
