texttoimage with transparent background

I just got GD set up to make my buttons render as images to match a font. It is a really neat function, but I really need the text to be rendered with a transparent background. Is this possible? I tried setting the texttoimage.ini style that I am using to background=transparent just as guess, but that resulted in a white background.

Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, what the syntax is? If not, are there any workarounds?
