what's $User:redirect_uri for in user/login

I find this line:

<INPUT type="hidden" name="RedirectURI" value="{$User:redirect_uri}" />

in standard template for user/login.tpl.

What's the purpose of that? Can I use this to redirect any logged in user user to it's "homepage"?
