Ez.no Forum: Please eliminate target="_blank"

It is rather frustrating to have new windows open when a new window opens after clicking on a link within a forum. There isn't any visible business need for it as the vast majority of links are to other ez.no addresses, and considering the user-base is made up of those familiar with the Web there isn't much need to make it obvious that a link is leading off-site and thus is not associated with eZ systems.

If a user wants to display the new document in another window they can easily choose to do so, but it shouldn't be forced upon everyone.

Here, here! I use a tabbed browser, especially for tasks such as administrating my ezpublish site. The user site is in one tab, the admin site in another, and the documentation in a third. Having new windows pop all the time just screws up my workspace.

I agree, but we live in an ie dominated world.

as ie is not going to be upgraded until microsoft release a new os (2005?) websites will have to start accomodating other people well before then...

I too use a tabbed browser - which for those of you who do not, it is as Mark has indicated, a beautiful thing for administration. I have set up Mozilla to have a group of sites in one bookmark, each of which opens a tab. So, I hit one button and the eZ forum is in one tab, the content administration is in a second tab, the admin cache screen is a third and the development site is the fourth. Very convenient! :)

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who has found the new windows annoying.

I suspect there may be a few ie users who find the new windows annoying, too, especially when the target is another peice of documentation on the ezp site.

Tabs are lovely. I used to use opera before mozilla became really stable. I don't i could go back to a browser without them!

Slightly offtopic: Ez and tabbed browsing sometimes has problems. If you have forms on your page the node ids can become confused at times. For example, the common problem i hit at the ez.no site is when logging in. I sometimes open several forum entries at once and take my time reading each. When i try to login i am redirected back to a previous article, not the article i was at. I think this is due to some session information not being updated among the many tabs i open.

Hmm, can you fix this in css? Not sure if you specify a target in css, and omit it for mozilla? :)

I don't know of any way to set that up via CSS, and to be honest I don't think special treatment should be given to a browser in this case. I just ran a quick test:

In IE 6 on Windows XP I opened this thread in a new window (let's call it 'A').
I opened a new window ('B') and navigated to the Time Delayed thread.
I opened a third window ('C') and navigated to the Blog-Like Configuration thread.
I returned to 'B' and logged in and was promptly directed to the thread shown in window 'C' (Blog-Like).

As this confirms that it is indeed a session (last page visited is used for the redirect) issue, I think it should be changed for all browsers. I would think that the current URL could be passed to the redirect code instead ofrelying on sessions...

I cant see any reason for using target="_blank". It isnt needed in IE, it isnt needed at all.

Opening new windows is counter to how for example explorer works. You click on a folder it opens in the current window. So, target="_blank" should be confusing to a novice and irritating for those who know what they want

I usually open things in a blank window myself, using rmb + up, down, up gesture in Opera. Thats usually done in a news site where I want the articles to be ready for reading when Im finished browsing the frontpage or latest news section.

When I want a new window or tab I request it.
