add to basket - how to pass non integer values e.g. for ordering goods like cables (5,30 meter)

we are want to use ez publish to sell goods like cables. the customer should order e.g. 5,5 meter cable. ez publish converts this to an integer value (5 meter) due to an integer format of the field item_count (table ezproductcollection_item).

has anyone solved this problem? is it possible to use the table ezproductcollection_item_opt for this?
