Extension to manipulate an external php application

Hi, I have an external php application, a product configurator engine with a form to compile that returns a table with product components. I integrated this engine in my eZpublish site using an <iframe> tag, but this isn't a very good solution. I need an eZpublish extension that dialogues with my form application, sending variables to the form and receiving html code to display trough eZpublish engine. There is a simple way to do it, or (better) there is something, maybe a contrib extension, that can do it?

Have a look at my SpreadShirt extension (http://ez.no/community/contribs/template_plugins/spreadshirt ), it does something similar.If you are accessing a local script, things are even easier.

The general idea would be to write a custom extension providing either a template operator or a fetch function (or both), allowing you to embed the desired functionality inside a standard eZ Publish template.
