scope="global" not respected??

I need to run a certain javascript (TinyMCE if anyone cares ;) the first time the ezxmltext.tpl template is being parsed.

So I figured I'll take a global variable and check if it's already run:

{if is_set($tinymce_active)|not} 

{def $tinymce_active="true" scope="global"}

DOODAAH
{/if}

That will, however, output DOODAAH for every xml field as it seems the scope="global" isn't being honored...
