Basic install question

I have downladed and uploaded the windows zip version. Upon going to the site using a browser [ie] I get only a blank page.
Excuse me for my naivity but I was expecting to find an intallation or set up page.
Obviously the site needs to be configured to connect to a data base etc....how is this done?
Am I missing something really obvious or do I have to alter some files in note pad etc....
i have searched the ez site for basic installation instruction but as yet have failed to find what is needed just to get basic installation happening.
Can any one help?

You're right, there's a setup wizard that should show up when running eZ Publish for the very first time:
http://ez.no/doc/ez_publish/technical_manual/4_0/installation/normal_installation/installing_ez_publish_on_windows

If it is not there, there must be some serious incompatibility between your hosting environment and eZ, or even hosting problem on its own before that. Make sure that you meet all the requirements for your version, also look into the system logs.

Thanks for your help. However still confused.
I am attempting to install the software on a unix server.
Some basic questions.
Which download should I use from the download page?
I am using here at home a windows xp machine and using a FTP handler I upload to my hosting account which is Unix with what appears to be state of art mySQL facilities.
I have successfully installed many CMS packages before and am puzzled why I am having diffficulty with this one.
Possiby the download file I am using is the wrong one.

To install on a UNIX server via a personal windows PC which file should I download, unpack and then publish to the server?

Hello,

I think it is clear your having problems because you lack the basic knowledge, skills and experience with ssh, scp, unix permissions and hosting.

You will -need- to read (practice and re-read) almost all of ez.no/doc to educate yourself to a point which you can comfortably and reliably install the software.

Your problems are prolly not with the software you have downloaded rather surround your experience.

Fortunately you are your own master ... you can learn these skills on your own to reach your goals.

Asking for some one to write you a tutorial just for you in this forum is ... unreasonable .... given you have not studied enough, on your own, to ask better questions. They are generic, we are specific.

You are absolutely correct. Experience and most definitely the terminology issues.
However I have checked your link provided and am starting to get to understand the way this site presents it's support information. To be honest I must say I like it! Just takes a bit of getting used to vcompared to other CMS sites that use various combinations of methods and language.
For example I downloaded an ealier version of eZPublish and was suprised to find when I unpacked it it came with it's own apache server etc...for use on my personal machine.
From all the net searching I have done to find a good cms I have never encountered that sort of delivery. So I am impressed even If I am not experienced enough to fuilly utilise the features supplied. [I have been attempting to learn how to run a server with my own PC so as to avoid the constant need to upload websites for testing [- not much success so far I might add]]
However what has confused me is the use of words like unix and wndows and as to whether or not they apply to the hosting server [ internet ] or local machine [ personal PC]
I understand that this is because I am from outside the usual client base that frequents this site and accept this disability with grace.

Having looked at the link you have provided has provided some clues that I shall work with and hopefully my future questions will become more concise and specific.
I might even write an "installation guide for dummies" [ I am a writer by profession ] and submit it for this sites review.
