I unpacked ezpublish like told (using the latest release of PHP 5.0 stable) and I tried going to run it (my folder is simply ezpublish, so it is at http://localhost/ezpublish/). It comes up with
Error 200OK
I've tried turning register_globals Off and On in php.ini, but it doesn't change a thing. I even tried adding a simple at the bottom of the script, but same message.

OK. It ended up saying Fatal error: Cannot re-assign $this in \ezpublish\lib\ezutils\classes\ezdebug.php on line 194
I then searched for that here and it said you do not support PHP 5.
However, that takes me back to another question.

Confused,
eZ publish does not support PHP 5. Please use the latest stable PHP 4.x.

You should use PHP 4.3.x (latest is 4.3.8 I think) with eZ publish. PHP 5 isn't supported, as mentioned by the various install documents like: http://ez.no/ez_publish/documentation/installation/normal_installation/requirements_for_doing_a_normal_installation
