I suggest you initialise your database with the setup-wizard that comes with eZ publish and that is executed the first time you access a new eZ publish installation (or if you set "CheckValidity=true" in section "[SiteAccessSettings]" of site.ini). If you don't do that and initalise your database with the two .sql files you used, the locale of your objects in the db might be wrong. The setup-wizzard look which languages you want to use and set the correct values in the database. You can do the same thing by hand. Search for "eng-GB" in your database in change it to your locale "ger-DE" or "ita-IT" or whatever contentobjectlocale you use. This is most likly the problem you have with your database causing the problem you have no root-node. As I said: I recommend the setup-wizard to initially setup a new eZ publish installation! To check if this is really the problem without changing anything in the database, add this to your /settings/override/site.ini:
[RegionalSettings]
ContentObjectLocale=eng-GB
If you now have a root-node you definitely located your problem (wrong locale in your database).
