Will 3.8 work on php 4.3.9 as this is the latest version for redhat 4

You have to use 3.6 ... or better, try to compile/install 4.4 along with 3.8.2 when it comes out (lots of important bug fixes)

Or even better: eZp 3.8.2 with php4.4.3 witch is in rc2 right now.

It is not available yet as an official download (I guess this will be something for august/september). If it is urgent and you do not need the multi-lingual features of 3.8, use php4.4 with ezp 3.7 (the latter is what we use on production servers now).

It is due to reference bugs in php 4.3 which were solved in php 4.4
