Integrating ezpublish with external Applications.

Hi,
Is there a way to use ezpublish as a Document Management System.?

Is it possible to integrate ezpublish with other databse driven applications so that,
while importing content in to ezpublish, some of the attributes defined in ezpublish can be populated from external database

For example,i have a MemberList Table in a external application.

Can i create a content class, which can integrate with MemberList Table in the external application?

When i create content , the attribute values can be selected from existing values,instead of user entering values.
