Newbie: add images menu

A question... How could I do a menu with images in fist level? (but not background images)

Level 1

(Section) Item 1 (It will not be a image-background)
Item 1.1 (text)
Item 1.2 (text)
……
(Section b) Item 2

(Section c) Item 3

(Section d) Item 4

………….

1.- Relationating an image-object to the folder to show in flat_left.tpl?

2.- Adding the image directly?. I think this is not the best option because creating more folders they will not be showed.

Any idea?
