Multilingual website: problem with the untranslated object

It's configured so if the object isn't translated, it displays the existing language. By default, most of the objects are only in french and not translated. Therefore, the english website contains moslty french content but a few key translated objects. I have several problems with the french version seen in the english interface: - if I try to edit it, it tries to edit the english version and I got a lot of error messages (non of the attributes can be found, as they don't exist in english) - I don't want it to be indexable by the search engines (as it duplicates the info seen on the french part). However, I don't know if I need to create the translation (until I get the error messages when I try to edit the content). When I'm on a language (say FR), and I want to edit a content that doesn't exist yet in FR (it only exists in EN), I get error messages and I have to create the translation (the hard way). Shouldn't it be displayed under Manage Translations in the Admin GUI?

It might also be displayed in the right pane in front end editing.
